What if is a series of opinion based articles (our opinions mainly) regarding multiple aspects of games and competitive gaming.
On our first entry, we will have a brief analysis on What if Capcom announced a new entry on the famous Versus series.
We can take this discussion about a month ago, when the voice actor for V of the latest Devil May Cry game tweeted the following sentence:
This alone sparked a light of hope for many fighting game fans (including myself), specially those who are more into the Versus style of fighting games, and although the voice actor himself denied having any information regarding the production – or not – of said game, it lead to many wishlists and speculations.
To give some context, a Versus style fighting game refers to any fighting game that follows (to an extent) the formula of the long termed series of Marvel vs. Capcom games (going even further to games like X-men: Children of the Atom) .
The main features of these games include being a team based game (players get to choose teams made up of 2 or 3 characters) with high speed matches, flashy combos and movement, and a colorful cast usually comprising the most iconic characters from two beloved pop culture and video game franchises: Marvel Comics and Capcom.
Fast forward to 2017 after the latest Versus game, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite crashed due to a bad launch and sloppy post-launch management from developers, many began thinking that this was the last time we ever saw a Versus game from Capcom or at least one with Marvel in it.
But earlier this year, after the Twitter incident I asked myself the question: What if a new Versus game was on the horizon?
As a big disclaimer: we do not possess any sort of information of any kind on development of any game currently being made by Capcom.
What would a new Versus game mean? On first thought, it would mean that Capcom would not have given up on the series, and looking forward to reconnect with their fans, take into consideration all that was done correctly between all iterations (when I say this I am only taking into consideration the ones I have played which goes from Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes up to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite). What are these aspects?
I believe we can take some of what I believe are the best aspects of each iteration I know and love. I will describe game mechanics first, followed by a roster wishlist. And if I want to keep things consistent I will have Marvel characters, although it would be a much safer option development-wise in my opinion to have an All-Capcom based roster.
From MVC1 I would like to have the 2v2 team system. Although 3v3 is the far more popular style, 2v2 has always been my favorite, because that hero-on-hero partnership always struck me more as a team than 3v3 although I do not know why.
Moving forward from MVC2 and UMVC3 I will like the assist system, in which you have a designed button for a character to use one of its moves to help out in the battlefield. From an artistic point of view UMVC3 art style was always my personal favorite.
From MVCI, which is one of the most fun gameplay wise personally, I will like to keep the active tag system, so that we can tag in a teammate in order to extend combos or setups. I will also like to have a similar system to the Infinity Stone system in which you could use a third character but only for an assist value (think of having Dr. Doom in your team only for his Hidden Missiles assist but not being able to tag him). To keep it simple, you will select a team of 3: 2 actively tagging characters and one just as an assist, in the same fashion of MVC1 system. You could also have the third character use a Hyper Combo (or super) as the Infinity Storm of the system.
Netplay-wise I would keep MVCI‘s netcode, as it ran fantastically and needed just a few quality of life tweaks to make it more practical for the users.
For the roster I decided to keep it the same size as MVC3 with 36 characters, 18 Marvel and 18 Capcom. My selection will have (in no specific order):
- Iron Man
- Captain America
- Dr. Strange
- Dr. Doom
- Black Panther
- Doc Ock
- Ryu (with his MVC1 Ken & Akuma install super)
- Chun Li
- Jin Saotome
- Captain Commando
- Strider Hiryu
- Jill Valentine (MVC2)
- Kolin (biased choice)
- Phoenix Wright
- Viewtiful Joe
- Jedah Dohma
With no other information officially released this remains just an opinion and it’s open for discussion, so leave any thoughts on the comments and let us know how would you mold your new Versus game.
