Nintendo has finally announced a more compact, handheld-only version of the Switch called the Switch Lite. A first look video was unveiled by Nintendo this morning on YouTube.
With looks similar to the flagship model but with “Dedicated to handheld play” differences. To start the we get 3 color options, yellow, gray and turquoise, a proper d-pad in place of the not so great individual directional buttons and say good bye to the Joy-Cons they have been replaced with integrated controls.
The most notable change, the Switch Lite wont have a dock and will lose connectivity to a television, for this we do get a more compact lighter ( 123 grams ) handheld console then its predecessor, with a slightly smaller 5.5 inch touchscreen rocking 1280 x 720 resolution.
Moving on from the changes above the Switch Lite can play the games in the Nintendo Switch library that support handheld mode.
“For games that do not support handheld mode, players can wirelessly connect compatible controllers (sold separately) to Nintendo Switch Lite. If using separate Joy-Con controllers, users will need to have a device to recharge them, such as the Joy-Con Charging Grip.”
The Switch Lite will retail for $199.99 ($329.95 in Australia), pre-orders are open now with the release set for September 20, 2019. Is this the switch you have been waiting for?
