Paper Mario The Origami King
The original Paper Mario was released all the way back in the year 2000 on the Nintendo 64 and received critical acclaim. To this day there are still plenty of fans of the original game and even a small but active speedrunning community. So here we are 20 years later with a new Paper Mario title The Origami King. So will it live up to its predecessor?
Peach’s Castle gets relocated by King Olly who is hell-bent on folding the world. Enter Mario who is able to wield mighty paper techniques and flatten King Olly’s plan. Mario must untie the streamers now wrapped around the castle, each streamer leading him through to a different region for him to conquer. The regions include raging rapids, an ancient ruin, a ninja-filled mansion and a desert oasis all promised to be packed to the brim with excitement.
There is a new ring based combat model for Paper Mario: The Origami King. You must line up enemies and selecting the right attack before time runs out to ensure you deal maximum damage to your opponents. It looks like a neat twist on the classic turn-based combat. The trailer shows Mario stomping enemies with Mario’s boots, whacking them with a hammer and using items to heal or attack.
During boss battles, you’ll need to take on a slightly different approach as you use the rings to create a path into the boss for your attack. The bosses themselves, or “the menacing members of the legion of stationery”, look hilarious and include a set of 12 coloured pencils, a rubber band man and to top it off a tape dispenser complete with tape.
As with all good Mario games, we are promised heaps of action, mini-games and secrets for those willing to do a little exploration.
Paper Mario: The Origami King promises to be another fantastic game in the ever-expanding Mario universe and is out now for Nintendo Switch.
