Sony reveal DualSense – The new PlayStation 5 Controller

Sony have today revealed not only the first official images of the all-new DualSense, the wireless controller for the PS5, but also some if its features including haptic feedback (adaptive) for L2 and R2 triggers, ergonomic design, a new ‘Create’ button, and a built-in microphone all designed to “heighten the feeling of immersion within games”.

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.” – SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan

Ergonomically Friendly

At first glance, the DualSense controller appears similar in appearance to its predecessor, the DualShock 4. But apart from the familiar button layout and orientation, the DualSense is a whole new beast — It’s lighter, more ergonomically friendly, and features improvements that most people won’t notice, such as an improved rechargeable battery and subtle updates to its grip. I’m personally a fan of its new sleek appearance, it actually reminds me of a stormtrooper, but hopefully my aim with the DualSense isn’t quite that bad!

Adaptive Feedback

The DualSense not only includes the traditional haptic feedback, or rumble that we are all used to, but also adaptive triggers have been engineered into the L2 and R2 buttons, meaning that you will feel the true feedback of your actions such as drawing a bow to shoot an arrow, or planting the accelerator down in a racing sim.

Create With Your Friends

Say goodbye to the ‘Share’ button and say hello to the ‘Create’ button. The Create button builds on the foundation laid by the industry-first Share button, but with improving the seemless process of players to creating gameplay content and sharing it to your friends, or for your own personal enjoyment.

Built-in Microphone

Now for my favourite additon, the built-in microphone array. This little baby will allow gamers the ability to chat with your friends without the need of a headset. It is a nice addition that improves the quality of life, because there is always times when we want to have a quick chat before logging off, rather than having to find your headset and connect it up just to tell someone you’re logging off!
