Audio-Technica Content Creator Pack Review

There is a common misconception that you must spend thousands of dollars on the latest equipment to produce high-quality content for YouTube, Twitch, Mixer, and other various streaming platforms. Sure, having an expensive XLR setup with a pair of ATH-M70x would be perfect, but unless you want to spend thousands of dollars on expensive hardware and peripherals even before you have your first subscriber, then it can be difficult to know what exactly you need to create high-quality content. Luckily enough, Audio-Technica have put together the ultimate content creator pack that is perfect if you are looking at becoming a streamer, hosting your own podcast or even if you are just looking at upgrading existing setup– the Audio-Technica Content Creator Pack is everything you need.

What’s In The Box?

The Audio-Technica Content Creator Pack consists of the ATR2500x-USB Cardioid Condenser USB-C Microphone, ATH-M20x Pro Monitoring Headphones, a detachable desk boom arm, tripod stand, and of course, a USB-C to USB-A cable. This combination caters to a wide range of applications such as podcasting, home studio recording, field recording, voiceover applications, streaming, or just general gaming with your friends. Sorry, the Audio-Technica hat isn’t included 🙂

Attention, Attention

Let’s begin with the ATR2500x-USB microphone — This side-address cardioid condenser microphone not only offers studio-quality performance, but also includes a handful of useful features such as a 3.5mm headphone jack that allows you to monitor your recording and volume control buttons. This audio feedback can be controlled via the volume control buttons located on the mic itself. This is quite a nice feature that I found myself using rather than conventional software feedback. In my experience, it is the simple features done well that always leave a lasting impression on the consumer, an area which Audio-Technica never fail to deliver

Enough of the foreplay, let’s talk specifications — The ATR2500x-USB features a 30 – 15,000 Hz frequency response and a high-quality analog-to-digital converter that produces 24-bit bit depth with up to 192 kHz sampling rate. Despite knowing all this technical data prior to setting up the ATR2500x-USB, I was still surprised at the clarity and accurate sound reproduction it produced, especially when I compared to one of the best USB microphones on the market- the Blue Yeti. The different is night and day; The ATR2500x-USB is able to produce a clean and crisp sound that makes the Yeti look sub-par, while its cardioid polar pattern design basically muted all ambient noise that was either to the side of behind the microphone, exactly what you expect from a high-quality cardioid microphone. To put it bluntly, the ATR2500x-USB is simply on another level when compared to ANY USB microphone on the market.

Setting up the ATR2500x-USB is easy and thanks to the Audio-Technica Creator Pack, you have two options included in the box. I preferred the boom arm setup that despite initially looking complicated, was rather simple to set up. The mic itself features a threaded base that connects onto the collar of the boom arm. Then it is as simple as tightening the clamp onto your desk and adjusting the boom’s axis’ until the mic is in the perfect position. This set up is perfect for people who work from home, especially as the Coronavirus pandemic has forced many of us this pathway. I found having your mic elevated and off of your desk means more real estate for your keyboard or laptop.

Some users may prefer the mini-tripod setup that is the perfect setup for playing games with your friends or for a chat over Skype. Setting up the mini-tripod is even easier than the boom arm, simply screw the mic into the tripod collar and plug the cable in!

Let’s not forget about the ATH-M20x; These headphone may be Audio-Technica’s entry level cans, but Audio Technica’s M-Series range is anything but entry level. The M-Series is purposely designed for tracking and mixing, which means that the M20x is perfect for playback and monitoring of your content, especially at this price.

The ATH-M20x feature your standard 15-20,000 Hz frequency range, 40mm neodymium drivers, and connect via 3.5mm (allowing you feedback via your ATR-2500x-USB). Audio-Technica claim that the M20x are “tuned for enhanced low-frequency performance”, a claim that I can confidently confirm is true. Being purposely designed for tracking and mixing, it is no surprise that these headphones excels at low frequencies and produces quite a lot of bass — Great for monitoring.

The over ear design works well and provides great isolation from ambient noise. I often found myself not being able to hear myself talk, which was actually a blessing in disguise now I think about it. The padded foam on the ear cups was soft and comfortable, ensuring that the headphones were a tight and snug fit on my head. The padded headband is a nice touch, but the plastic finish of the headphones did feel a bit cheap. The overall design of the M20x stays true to the M-Series with the only real noticeable difference being a lack of cosmetic accents and less movement in the swivel ear cups (only 15 degrees, rather than 90). One aspect I must touch on is weight; they’re light, weighing only 190 grams. I was expecting them to weigh around the same as the iconic ATH-M50x, but in fact they weigh 95 grams less than the M50x’s. It was often quite easy to forget these are entry level headphones!

What Is It Worth?

The RRP for the Creator Pack is $349AUD, which is honestly great value for a high-quality microphone, headphones and accessories. The ATR-2500x-USB retails for $199, the ATH-M20x is $99, and a high-quality boom stand and tripod will set you pack anywhere from $50-$100. Audio-Technica aren’t trying to sell a collection of sub-par redundant products at a discounted price, the Content Creator Pack is designed to combine some of their best products within a budget for both new and existing content creators who want improve the quality of their content for their audience.
